Hiring: Wind River/Bighorn Basin District Invasive Annual Grass Coordinator

In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the University of Wyoming’s Institute for Managing Annual Grasses Invading Natural Ecosystems (IMAGINE) we are seeking an individual for our Wind River/Bighorn Basin District Invasive Annual Grass Coordinator, which is a Research Associate III – Invasive Annual Grasses position.

Location: Worland, Wyoming

Salary range: $50,000-$55,000; full-time

Applications Due: November 28, 2023 by 11:59 PM

Anticipated Start: January 4th, 2024 (negotiable)

This position will be field-based and dedicated to accelerating the conservation of the sagebrush steppe with the specific task of addressing invasive annual grasses in northwestern Wyoming. Ideal candidates are passionate about solutions-oriented land management. They will work closely with an incredible network of federal, state and local partners. Their collaboration will develop and implement strategic invasive annual grass programs in the region while providing monitoring support and coordination for fuels management and grazing projects.

The Wind River/Bighorn Basin BLM District and adjacent private and state lands house some of the most intact, diverse, and productive sagebrush steppe remaining in the American West and approximately 25% of Wyoming’s designated Priority Habitat Management Areas for Greater Sage-grouse. The district is home to multigenerational family ranches intermixed with public land that supports a sporting heritage vital to recreational economies, all anchored by our sagebrush rangelands. However, the expanding presence and dominance of cheatgrass is threatening the sagebrush ecosystem, especially in lower elevations of the district.

While the coordinator position will focus on invasive annual grass projects, they will have the opportunity to assist in addressing the other primary threats affecting the sagebrush steppe ecosystem such as conifer expansion and wet meadow/riparian habitat degradation.
